Montego Bay

Among Black Magic and Emerald Waters

An MSC cruise to Cuba, the Caribbean and Antilles will take you to a tropical paradise. Our ship will dock in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Located along the northwest coast of Jamaica, it is one of the most important cities of the island; it is thought that Christopher Columbus anchored his ships here in 1494 when he “discovered” Jamaica on his way from Cuba; he called the new country Santiago.

The lively city centre is dominated by Gloucester Avenue, the main street or “Hip Strip”, where tourists and locals stroll and investigate different bars; in the centre, one can also admire the St. James Parish Church, an 18th century religious building in Georgian style surrounded by a lush tropical garden.
Along the same street, there are also the Court House and the colourful Craft Market: it is impossible to leave without buying a souvenir from at least one of the different stands full of local crafts, from clothes to woven straw hats and jewellery.

An MSC excursion will take you to the “Land of Wood and Water”: encountering breath-taking views, you will float pleasantly on wooden rafts along Marta Brae, a river with emerald-coloured waters. Your voyage to the Caribbean with MSC Cruises will also introduce you to the history and the culture of Montego Bay on board a 4x4 Land Cruiser. Must-sees: the Doctor’s Cave, perhaps the most famous beach of these shores, and the beaches of Walter Fletcher, Gloucester Avenue and Cornwall.

A cruise to Jamaica also means encountering black magic and ancient legends. An excursion will take you to the meandering halls of Rose Hall Great House: it is said that the house is haunted by the ghost of Annie Palmer, the White Which of Rose Hall, who owned the abode and was guilty of murdering her four husbands and numerous slaves working on the surrounding sugar plantation.

        • OCHO RIOS AND DUNN’S RIVER FALLS

          ACTIVE & ADVENTURE

          MTB11

Travelling through Jamaica's beautiful countryside, you will pass many historic sites and villages to the world-famous Dunn's River Falls. It is believed to be the site of the famous battle of "Las Chorreras", fought in 1657 between the Spanish and the English for possession of the island. The English won, and under British rule "Las Chorreras" was first owned by Charles Pryce. The site later became part of the 276 acre Belmont property, which was acquired by the Jamaican Government in 1972, to provide for future development of recreational and park facilities. Described as a living and growing phenomenon, it continuously regenerates itself from deposits of travertine rock, the result of precipitation of calcium carbonate from the river, as it flows over the falls. The small dome-shaped cataracts are usually associated with thermal spring activity found in limestone caves. Experience the thrill of climbing the waterfall, in a human chain led by experienced Falls Guides. Pause at the 'massage parlour' and experience the soothing effects of the water as it cascades over the rocks, to the sea. For the less adventurous, view the activities of the more intrepid from the "safe" vantage point of the terrace or deck. For those who enjoy Mother Nature’s gifts, lose yourself in the lush tropical foliage of ferns, bamboos, ginger lilies, crotons, orchids, a variety of palms and breadfruit trees. After visiting the falls, you will be treated to a delicious Jamaican buffet lunch, served at the Almond Tree Restaurant before the return drive to Montego Bay. Please Note: there are many steps at Dunn’s River Falls. Do not forget your sun protection and your towel!

        • GO NATIVE IN JAMAICA

          CULTURE AND HISTORY

          MTB36

Immerse yourself in the culture and nature of Jamaica for half a day, which begins when you head for downtown Montego Bay by coach. A city drive then includes such key sights as the old Montego Fort, a former jail called The Cage, Sam Sharpe Square and the new Civic Centre, followed by an inside visit of the 18th-century St. James’ Parish Church. As you then head for Johns Hall on the outskirts of town, you can enjoy views of the 19th-century Creek Dome, built to protect a source of freshwater, and the Farmers’ Market. After meeting the children of Mount Olive Basic School, you’ll then head for the John’s Hall Plantation, where a welcoming glass of fresh coconut water awaits you. A guided nature walk then follows, during which you can learn about the different trees and their uses, sample seasonal fruit, catch views of the resident bird- and other wildlife as well as find out how coffee is processed. After enjoying a typically Jamaican lunch, with drinks and a sampling session of coffee, rum and liqueurs, there’ll be time for you to visit the on-site gift shop. The leisurely return journey to the ship then brings the tour to a close. Please note: guests are recommended to wear light comfortable clothing, flat walking shoes, high-factor sunscreen and to bring cash to cover any additional purchases.

        Jamaica

        Stunning landscapes
        Stunning landscapes

Rightly famous for its beaches and music, beautiful, brash Jamaica is much more besides. There’s certainly plenty of white sand, turquoise Caribbean sea and swaying palm trees, but there are also spectacular mountains and rivers, tumbling waterfalls and cactus-strewn savannah plains.

Far more than just a resort, the island also boasts vibrant towns and cities such as sprawling Kingston, which inspired the music of Bob Marley and countless other home-grown reggae superstars.
Jamaica is a country with a swagger in its step; proud of its history, sporting success and musical genius; but also with a weight upon its shoulders.

As the birthplace of the “all-inclusive” hotel, Jamaica is well suited to those travellers who want to head straight from their cruise ships to the beach. But to get any sense of the country at all during your cruise to Jamaica, you’ll need to do some exploring.

It’s undoubtedly worth it, as this is an island packed with first-class attractions, oozing with character and rich with a musical and cultural heritage; if you’re a reggae fan, you’re in heaven.
